Glutton in Chile: Foreign food edition

Welcome to YQtravelling’s FoodFriday. The day of the week when I show off some of the lovely eats I had while travelling.

Today, we’re still in Chile but we’re having food that is not Chilean. Does that even make sense? Let’s eat.

For the past few weeks, we ate good and bad food in Chile as well as fast food. Today, we’ll be munching on some exported cuisine, just to mix up our palate a bit.

Japanese food in Santiago

My first meal in Chile wasn’t Chilean. It was Japanese, although not very authentic Japanese.

龟苓膏 Guīlínggāo is an acquired taste.

It looks like a jelly made out of squid ink. It tastes like bitter Chinese medicine, even when you drown it with the sweet syrup shops provide.

The only consolation is that it’s good for your health. In Chinese tradiotional medicine speak: It is good for “cooling” the body.

I didn’t like Guīlínggāo when I was a kid. It was too bitter. But now that I’ve grown up, I quite enjoy the bitterness and its contrast with the honey-sweet syrup.

If you are ever in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China, try a bowl. Go on.

#FoodFri Chinese food in America

Reporting from the US of A. I had two Chinese meals on the first two days.

Honestly, they were good. A 9.1 out of 10 good. Maybe it’s because they weren’t very cheap meals.

The crabs were huge! One crab could feed 6 persons, seriously! The lobsters weren’t as fantastic but still good.

Funny thing is, the vegetables here aren’t really chopped up nicely. I feel like I’m eating a bonsai sometimes.
