#YQrtw recap: Apr 9 Sri Lanka: Guidebooks are not everything

I’m recapping my round-the-world trip from 2013 with a photo and memory from each day of the trip. The two might be totally different events or things.

Sri Lanka yqtravelling

In the late afternoon, I took a bus out of Anuradhapura to Mihintale. I read about it in a guidebook and thought I must visit:

MIHINTALE, 12km east of Anuradhapura, is famous as the place where Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka.

I got on the right bus but it was very crowded. I managed to get a seat but the man standing in the aisle mistook my shoulder for his crotch stand. It was no fun and I kept leaning forward. The problem with micro sexual harrassment like this is you never know if it was deliberate or not.

I missed the stop at Mihintale and ended up walking for half an hour before reaching the site. It was getting dark and quite deserted. I put on my Brave Girl facade and walked the stairs of the hill but only halfway because it didn’t feel right.

I didn’t reach the top and decided to return to the homestay before sun set. The only thing I dislike about travelling solo is having to be on CONSTANT VIGILANCE throughout the trip.

I also decided I won’t just visit a place because it’s in the guidebook and I do need to do at least a bit of planning.
