#YQrtw recap: (parts of ) Greece

I’ve been recapping my round-the-world trip on Instagram. I’ve finally gathered them to be posted here.

2013 May 21 Athens ?> Mykonos

Like most places I travelled to during #YQrtw, I didn’t have concerete plans until arriving in the city. I wanted to go to the Greek islands and looking at my short stay in the country (7 days), I could only manage to squeeze in Mykonos since it’s nearer to Athens than Santorini.

I also broke my rule of planning everything on my own. I found a travel company along the streets of Athens and bought a Free & Easy package. That saved me time and anguish researching online to find the cheapest prices for transportation and accomodation.

Mykonos was small enough for me to walk from my hotel to the town centre. It was exactly like the postcards–white walls, steps and blue or red roofs. I walked and walked and walked, stopping for a Frappé.

Walking back to the hotel, I touched one of the shallow pools. The water was too cold for swimming.

#YQrtw recap May 22 Delos: Mythological birthplace of Apollo?

Bought a day trip tour to Delos. The island was deserted with ruins of merchant houses remaining.

#YQrtw May 23: Athens -> Istanbul

One reason I’d consider living in Greece is the gyro (pronounced “YEE-row” as the internet tells me). It’s a sandwich of meat and french fries wrapped in flatbread, very similar to a shawarma. I like how the pita bread is hot and it’s rather difficult to find a good angle to eat it without all the fillings falling out.

#YQrtw recap May 24, 2013

Took an overnight bus from Athens to Istanbul. A pair of Brazilian speaking bros spent the night joking and laughing so I couldn’t sleep.
One of the passenger had a tall bottle of alcohol which didn’t pass the Turkish customs. He was left there in the middle of the night.

I reached Istanbul without a hostel reservation. I ended up frantically looking for WiFi and a room. I swore never to reach a place without prebooked accommodation.
